Mission
The following is the mission statement adopted in 2003 by the Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial Committee:
A Time to Honor Our Own
Worcester Fire Fighters Paul Brotherton, Tim Jackson, Jerry Lucey, Jay Lyons, Joe McGuirk and Lt. Tom Spencer will forever be remembered as heroes for the ultimate sacrifice they made trying to save the lives of others on December 3, 1999. They lost their lives that tragic day. For another horrendous eight days, hundreds of fire fighters, police, EMS and other safety personnel, volunteers and private citizens worked night and day to recover their bodies from the rubble and chaos of the fire site.
With these thoughts in mind, a memorial task force committee called Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial Inc. was established in late 2001 to create a permanent memorial to the six fallen heroes. The committee’s responsibilities include recommending and choosing a location for the memorial; setting policy and direction; designing, constructing and maintaining the memorial; raising all necessary money for the memorial; and encouraging community participation and awareness in the process. In September 2002, the committee chose a site adjacent to Worcester Fire Headquarters on Grove Street, Worcester, Massachusetts. The site was formerly part of the 18-acre “Institute Park” donated to the City of Worcester in the late 1800s.
The memorial park and its designed amenities will be a tribute of inspiration, reflection, education, and acknowledgement to those six fire fighters who died and to what their call of duty meant, on a daily basis, to the protection of our lives and welfare.
