WORCESTER, Mass. -- Worcester Fitness is hosting a tribute Saturday, May 15, to the six Worcester firefighters who died battling a 1999 warehouse fire here.
The fund-raising event will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Worcester Fitness' newest location, in the Worcester Medical Center at 20 Worcester Center Boulevard.
All proceeds from the tribute are being donated by Worcester Fitness to the Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial Committee, which is establishing a memorial and memorial park to honor the firefighters.
The tribute will feature refreshments, including hors d'oeuvres and a martini bar, and a silent auction.
The auction will offer for sale collectibles from sports and entertainment celebrities, as well as other items. Included at the auction will be autographed hockey sticks from Boston Bruins' stars Cam Neely and Ray Bourque; autographed pucks from Mike Eruzione, captain and one of the stars of the U.S. hockey team that won the 1980 Olympic gold medal, a landmark victory featured in the recent film "Miracle on Ice"; footballs autographed by members of the New England Patriots; two film scripts for "Ice Age" autographed by its star, Worcester's own Denis Leary; DVDs of "Happy Gilmore" and "Mr. Deeds" and a CD from "50 First Dates," all autographed by comedian and film star Adam Sandler; two weeklong passes to the U.S. Women's Open this summer in Hadley.
Tickets for the tribute are $40 a person and $70 for a couple. They are available from Worcester Fitness, (508) 363-7000.
A national competition is set to begin soon to determine the winning design for the memorial and memorial park. The $3-million to $5-million memorial and memorial park are to be built through a public fund-raising campaign. The site is next to Worcester Fire Department headquarters off Grove Street on Salisbury Pond across from Institute Park.
The Worcester Fire Fighters Memorial Committee began working in late 2001 to establish a memorial to honor Firefighters Paul A Brotherton, Timothy P. Jackson, Jeremiah M. Lucey, James F. "Jay" Lyons III, Joseph T. McGuirk and Lt. Thomas E. Spencer. They died trying to save the lives of others in the abandoned building, located off Route 290 near downtown Worcester. Their deaths were the worst loss of firefighters' lives in more than 20 years in a building fire in America, and the third worst fire in Massachusetts' history.
